Large Meiji Period Japanese Bronze Figural Floor Urn circa 1900, three-part form, upper rim with Greek key design and applied dragon-form handles, above a hexagonal cuff with relief dragons, center section with panels featuring bird and floral motifs, flanked by mounted demon figures, raised on a tiered base with repeating dragon, floral, and scroll motifs, on six shaped feet.
Dimensions: 43 x 22 x 13 inches.
Monumental Japanese bronzes like this one from the Meiji period (1868-1912) were given prominence in Japan’s display at the international expositions held in Europe at the turn of the century. The skill required to cast these multi-sectioned bronzes with such great details made them objects of great interest.
