(2) Important Chinese Bodhisattva figures. Exhibited at the Ringling Museum of Art (Sarasota, Florida) “Paths to Paradise: The World of Buddhism” from August 22, 2009 to November 8, 2009. Provenance: From the Important estate of Carol and Howard Phillips (Park Avenue New York City, New York/Sarasota Florida). These two Manjusri and Samantabhadra boddhisattvas, once installed in a temple who serve as the attendants of Rocana Buddha. Samantabhadra (on the left) who defined the ten great vows of a bodhisattva, rides an elephant as his vehicle. Manjusri on the right, an idealization of wisdom, rides a lion. They and Rocana Buddha form a triad of the Three Saints for the teaching of Buddhism in China.
