James Henry Beard (Ohio, New York, 1811 – 1893) “Sketch for a race for life” Alexander Gallery label verso. Oil on board. Beard was an honorary member of the National Academy of Design* from 1848 to 1860 and a full member until his death. He became a painter at age 17, and worked in Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Louisville, New Orleans, and other Southern cities before opening a studio in Cincinnati in 1834. He traveled between Cincinnati, New York, and New Orleans before permanently moving to New York in 1870 where he spent the remainder of his life. Memberships included National Academy (hon.
