Thomas Brooks (1818 – 1891) Oil on canvas painting of a kneeling cavalier. Signed lower left. Housed in a gilded frame. Old Sotheby’s label verso. Thomas Brooks studied in London at the Sass’ Art School and at the Royal Academy of Arts under Henry Perronet Briggs as of 1838. In 1848 he settled in London. Brooks painted mainly dramatic seascapes, genre scenes, and portraits. Beginning in 1859, he presented his works at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Royal Society of British Artists.
