Jean F. Raffaelli (France, 1850 – 1924)

Jean Francois Raffaelli (France, 1850 – 1924) Paris Street Scene Painting. Signed lower right. Oil on board. Provenance: DuMouchelles auction (2010, estimate: $15,000-$20,000). Francois Raffaelli received his artistic training at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, where he enrolled in order to study under the great French painter Jean-Leon Gerome. In 1892, he relocated to a studio on the rue de Courcelles in Paris and began to paint colorful views of the streets, squares and parks of Paris. Given RaffaĆ«lli’s conviction that art played a sociological role through its analysis of the character of modern life, his new focus, in the 1890s and after, on the joyousness of Paris’s street life is revealing.
