Exhibited 19th C. Russian Icon depicting The Assembly of the Seven Archangels. Oil on wood. The archangels are regarded as messengers sent to announce or accomplish the will of God. Michael, the chief captain of the host, stands at the center and is depicted as a warrior with a red cloak, shield and spear. Michael leads the struggle against the forces of demons with the help of six angels, who include Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Selaphiel, Yegudiel, and Barachiel. God the Father is shown floating above in a cloud. Because of the shape of this icon, it was probably part of an iconostasis (icon screen) in a church.
